The civil service system is based on the idea that employees should be selected through fair and open competition and promoted on the basis of their individual merit. Regardless of the type of nepotism that occurs, it is generally viewed as unethical and unfair because it can give individuals an unfair advantage over others who might be more qualified for the position or role. Nepotism can have a direct impact on a company's performance and bottom line. Placing individuals in positions they are not qualified for can lead to poor decision-making, mismanagement of resources, and increased inefficiency. Ultimately, this can result in decreased profits and missed opportunities for growth. Nepotism means favoring only relatives in all positions, cronyism is favoring only companions and friends in every position, and patronage means that governing political party appoints their friends and relatives to only high positions not lower positions. Cronyism refers to the practice of individuals in positions of power or authority using their influence to favor close friends, associates, or allies, despite their experience. It often involves relationships beyond the workplace, such as friendships or political alliances. Favoritism, cronyism, and nepotism all interfere with fairness because they give undue advantage to someone who does not necessarily merit this treatment.
